A friend in need is a pest

Newlyweds’ Molly Thompson and Carl Peterson (Kate Hudson and Matt Dillon) reluctantly open their home for Best Man Randy Dupree (Owen Wilson) to stay with them for a few days (a week at the most). While things are going great for Carl, Dupree has fallen on hard times. He’s lost not only his job but his apartment and car as well. The net result is that he is sleeping on a cot at the local bar and riding a bike for transportation.

Carl is plucked from the pack of the cubed, windowless office masses at the large land development company owned by Molly’s father, Mr. Thompson (Michael Douglas). He gets a big promotion and a major project to manage. Although Thompson is all smiles, Carl starts to figure Pops is not exactly pulling for him when he suggests that Carl get a vasectomy and change his name to Carl Peterson-Thompson.

It’s evident the filmmakers had in mind recreating the off-the-wall success of last year’s hit, "Wedding Crashers." But "You, Me and Dupree" doesn’t come close. Dupree is indeed the guest from hell and the film quickly starts to really go into the toilet¾ in oh so many ways, aside from the obvious potty humor. The subplot dealing with the neighborhood kids begs the question of who is this guy Dupree and who can possibly stand him?

Oddly enough, there were some ethnic and homophobic remarks that seemed jarringly out of place and totally unnecessary. Then there was the scene involving, shall we say, self-gratification. Who is the audience for this move? The 12-year-old male brains that this would appeal to would have to be ensconced inside a 28-year-old male body, in order to buy a ticket.
