Vitus: 3.5 Stars

This coming of age/adult fairytale is an absolute delight. It features real life star pianist Teo Gheorghui as the title character Vitus, a young prodigy longing for nothing more than a normal life.

Vitus’s grandfather (Bruno Ganz who played Hitler brilliantly in "Downfall") is all warmth and nurture here, which adds a lightness to the film that perfectly balances the serious and overbearing parents that Vitus has to deal with.

At the age of six Vitus is a piano virtuoso and so mentally advanced that his IQ is too high to be measured. His emotions are so mature that he is always conflicted. As a youngster he is in love with his teenage babysitter. In love, not infatuated.

Mom quits her job to manage Vitus’s genius. Dad is on the fast track at his high tech firm yet we know that the top position will go to the favorite son of the owner rather than Dad.

Vitus intentionally falls while trying to fly in a contraption made by his grandfather. He fakes unconsciousness and the loss of his genius. Now he’s the normal person he wants to be.

His grandfather and father barely get along. Grandpa is a widower who has a house that needs more care and repair than he does. His finances are nothing great and he fears that he will outlive his money (five years). Operating undercover in the open, Vitus gets his grandfather to literally bet the ranch so he can dabble in the financial markets. He does and they become millionaires. Vitus then puts his focus on taking care of his grandfather, father and mother.

When the film opens, Vitus appears to be a precocious teen that steals an airplane yet when the film comes to a close, we see that if we had a kid like that, he’d be doing just what we’d want of him. This delightful film is a heartwarming joy for many reasons. One we particularly liked was how things played out between Vitus, now 12, and his babysitter. It’s one of those times when you can see a person who won’t have to say when they are older, "If I knew then what I know now, I would have…." Vitus does it all in his own right time.
