Claire Danes of "Stage Beauty" brings charm to her role as Mirabelle in this romantic comedy with the warm smile that you know connects to a tender heart. She is an attractive woman but not the type of beauty that you would expect to grace a high fashion magazine cover. She has left Vermont to make it as a successful artist in LA. The small town girl, with a tendency toward depression, works at the glove counter at Sak’s. When Mirabelle’s not working, she lives a-spinster-in-waiting life, with only her sad little apartment to keep her company. While at the laundromat, Mirabelle meets the geeky and totally unrefined Jeremy (Jason Schwartzman of "Bewitched"). After a very awkward getting to know you scene, Jeremy leaves with Mirabelle’s phone number. Their first date is so over the top hilarious that it’s painful to think of what it’s like to be a young woman out in the world trying to have a little fun. Later, when reflecting on her loneliness, Mirabelle gives Jeremy a call and they end up in bed together in one of the funniest sex scenes you’ll ever see. They are both round pegs in a world of square holes. One day an appealing man (though a bit older) named Ray (Steve Martin) buys a pair of gloves from Mirabelle. And much to her surprise when she arrives home a few days later the gloves have been sent to her by Ray¾ along with a note asking her out to dinner at a toney restaurant. Ray is a rich businessman, over 50, divorced, and looking for a good time. He owns a private jet that he uses for business and commuting between his luxury homes in LA and Seattle. Ray knows the power that personal attention backed by money can have on a young woman. His idea of being straight with her and having only a sexual affair is to tell her he travels a lot so they will have limited time together. Mirabelle’s affair with Ray is not the expected tale of the toss-up between the old guy with money or the young funky dude that’s my age. It’s about real choices that a woman may be faced with¾ if she’s lucky. Neither of these guys is the best man a woman can get, but either one is a far cry better than the boyfriends that Jennifer Lopez had in " An Unfinished Life" or Charlize Theron in "North Country."Steve Martin takes on a serious role much like Bill Murray did in Mirabelle will send chills down the spines of parents who have a daughter in a large, far away city. They know she is trying to make her way in the world and they will now better understand the choices she has to make. When you begin to understand your children as now being adults, you have made the jump to the next generation. As with all of us, successfully navigating the minefields of life takes both good judgment and luck. Fate certainly plays a part in who you meet where. After we make our decisions, then luck has the last word. As golfer Jack Nicklaus said, "the harder you work, the luckier you’ll get."
