A National Guard group, both men and women, fresh off a training mission for the Middle East, make a day trek to take supplies to a team of scientists at an old atom bomb test site in New Mexico. If you are a fan, you will recall in last year’s The Hills Have Eyes, the basic plot is very simple. Innocent people are killed in creative ways--- one by one. The important thing is if we like the way they are killed. More of the same here, but the people are a little more likeable than the family from THHE. Most of the dialogue is lame and the soldiers do lots of dumb things, like using the portable toilet and leaving their rifle leaning against it on the outside. The monster mutants trick the soldiers into coming to the top of the mountain by flashing a mirror and using a radio with a weak signal to make them think that someone needs rescuing. Never mind that they climbed in a few hours what would have taken a day to do. Forget about the fact that even though they could not get a strong enough signal to call for a helicopter to come to the rescue, they could have driven back into radio range a lot faster than climbing a mountain. There was decent suspense in how the soldiers got picked off one by one. They did put up a good fight with the mutants, that liked to rape and kill with a sense of humor, much as that is possible. Some scenes are over the top gory, which is a must for a film like this. For a film of the same genre that has a more creative story, rent Turistas. Again, if you’re a fan you’ll get what you expect and it’s probably worth your time because the acting is decent and the victims are knocked off with some gruesome creativity and violently sick humor. That said; don’t expect a category on horror in the Golden Globes anytime soon.
