The Ocean of Fire doesn’t sound very inviting, does it? But wait, it gets better. The Ocean of Fire is the name of an endurance race covering 3000 miles of Arabian Desert. It’s a race that’s thousands of years old and has claimed just as many lives. Only the finest horses, mounted by the finest riders from all over the world are invited to the challenge, and Frank Hopkins has just been added to the list. Frank Hopkins is the name of a cowboy in 19th century America who delivers for the pony express. Frank’s heritage is part Native American and part Anglo-Saxon, making him ideal for his position as an express rider, as he is oftentimes counted on to translate for other riders. Aside from being past his prime and a drunk, he and his trusty Mustang Hildago were billed as the "greatest long distance riding team in the world" by the Wild Bill old west show they performed in. The sheik who is the host - so to speak - of the Ocean of Fire race takes great offense that a man riding a horse that is not of the finest lineage lays claim to such a title. So, instead of removing the title, Frank agrees to compete in the race to show his title is earned. As you might expect, riders from around the world took equal exception to Franks’ entry into the race and all were looking to see, and take steps to ensure his failure. In the end it’s Frank’s stubbornness and the amazing relationship with the horse he often called brother that superceded their predictions. "Hidalgo" is a really well done film. It’s always a good thing when the sub-plots are interesting as well. There was the sheik’s daughter, trying to find how she fits into a society that her personality doesn’t fit, and there is Frank trying to come to grips with his split heritage as well. The movie offers beautiful scenery and special effects, sometimes overlapping them for optimal effectiveness. I found myself wondering how any thing living could survive that race! I hope you enjoy this movie as much as I did.
