Sam and Gray (Tom Cavanagh of TVs "Scrubs" and Heather Graham of Bobby) seem perfect together. They dance like Fred and Ginger, enjoy each other’s company, and share the same downtown loft. After all, they’ve known each other all their lives. Many think they are the perfect romantic couple. Actually, they are brother and sister, but that common mistake motivates them to help each other find a mate. Sam is about to marry Charlie (Bridget Moynahan of Lord of War) in Las Vegas, with Gray as their witness. After a night of heavy partying and drinking, Gray and Charlie share a passionate kiss. Bells go off for Gray, but Charlie doesn’t remember a thing. Gray wakes up to the fact that she is gay and in love with her brother’s wife. Taxicab driver Gordy (Alan Cummings of X2) is attracted to Gray, and she might be to him were it not for her new sexual awakening. Still, he’s her new best friend, and drives her to a trendy lesbian club. Molly Shannon (in the new comedy Year of the Dog), is Gray’s over-the-top work buddy, and Sissy Spacek (North Country) is her neurotic therapist, who has a unique style of helping her patients. As one would expect, things work out in the end. After all, this is a Hollywood comedy. A touch of slapstick runs throughout the film, and Pam thinks the comedic timing is off a bit. George thinks the film is funny and informative without being preachy. It will be interesting to see how a lighthearted lesbian oriented comedy, with well known actresses, does at the box office. The film is certainly as good as the average Hollywood romantic comedy, which is indeed a left-handed compliment. Both Pam and George liked the movie. It does a nice job of ringing the bell for a comedy that focuses on lesbian relationships rather than as a micro subplot or commentary in most films. For that it courageously breaks new ground.
