"Broad based with depth" is one way to accurately describe what the Chicago Latino Film Festival does with respect to portrayals of Latino culture. All sociological backgrounds are covered, and the films shown break the barriers of stereotypes and challenge the audience regarding mainstream perceptions of Latino identity. The festival is in its final week, so now is the time to firm up your plans on films to see between today and Wednesday, April 28. The closing film is "Sex with Love," with a special party following at the Sangria Café at 901 W. Weed Street (one block south of North Avenue). The film explores the different levels of love and sex among three couples: a teacher and her affair with a student’s father, a pregnant wife and her unfaithful husband and a prudish wife with an overzealous husband who is aching to please her. Films are shown at three venues: the Biograph, 3 Penny Cinema and Facets Multimedia. Facets is on Fullerton, about five minutes east of the Edens expressway and there is plenty of free parking. The other two theaters are five minutes further east at Fullerton and Lincoln Ave. Within a block of the 3 Penny & Biograph theaters, which are across the street from one another, is parking for only $3.00 at Children’s’ Hospital. General admission tickets are $10.00. Students, seniors and the disabled pay $9.00, and International Latino Cultural Center Members pay only $8.00. Most films are only shown twice, so it’s important to plan ahead. Movies on the weekend are most likely to sell out. Accordingly, it’s a good idea to arrive at the box office an hour before the start time if you have not purchased your ticket in advance. There are plenty of good film choices showing in back to back time slots. We recommend that you pick a movie you want to see and either come for an earlier film or stay for the next film that is showing in the same theater. This will make the most of your trip into the city. Attend one or more of the films playing at this year’s festival and your movie appetite will be more than satisfied.
