Directed by Scott Wiper. Action/ Reality Show Satire. Rated R for pervasive, strong brutal violence, and for language. Lions Gate Films. Running time: 113 minutes.

Ten international death row inmates are released by wardens from prisons where bribery is the norm. They are shipped to a remote Pacific island to participate in a live Internet broadcast, where only the one inmate alive after 30 hours is pardoned. Each contestant has an ankle bracelet with a timer to blow an explosive. The last prisoner standing will have their explosive device disarmed by the show’s director.

This is reality TV gone mad. Like a Pay-TV boxing match, the idea is to get 40 million viewers to pay $49.95 each to watch the carnage.

It’s essentially a snuff program. The expectation is that as we see people being killed, the ratings will go up exponentially.

As soon as the inmates start being dropped at the island, the violent, over the top action begins. One by one the inmates bite the dust while the director and his crew watch the action. Some of the production crew has pangs of consciousness while others think every moment is great.

All this plays out in a way that provides plenty of gross-out entertainment while offering a bit of social commentary about values and reality TV.

Hard core violence, based on trash TV is the best way to sum up this movie ¾ not a winning combination. Acceptable acting feeds a plot that may be closer to reality than it is to being preposterous.
