Sometimes when you see a mediocre film you have to wonder how easy it apparently is to put out a major release with the right connections. The same comedy troop known collectively as Broken Lizard that brought us "Super Troopers" deliver "Club Dread". Think Gilligan’s Island but with drug references, nudity, sexual situations and slasher violence. In terms of the acting talent again, Gilligan’s Island is a great point of reference. The key difference being that you won’t want to let your youngsters anywhere near it. The story centers around a bitter and burned out Jimmy Buffet wannabe and his resort island full of post spring break era singles and his Club Med style staff. There is a serial killer slashing the staff members one by one with a machete and it is up to the staff to use their Scooby Doo style detective skills to solve the case before he gets them all. There are some amusing moments here. The number of times the killer comes back from being dead are admittedly funny. Especially given his deteriorating condition each time he is attacked. There are also some very cute and very charming young women on the staff that are fun to watch. The acting is sophomoric, the laughs are sparse and the accents attempted here are terrible. Clichés abound. But your expectations here should be that this is a tolerable guilty pleasure and not anything likely to split the stitches from your recent gastric bypass surgery. With the right attitude going into it this, it may actually be helpful in prompting you to start thinking about where to go for spring vacation. Or in this case where not to go.
