Forgetting Sarah Marshall
Sarah (Kristen Bell) is the star of a CSI-style TV show that hopefully has one more season of life. Peter (Jason Segel), a real slob, is her boyfriend. He writes music for the show’s key dramatic moments. Sarah has grown beyond Peter and when she dumps him even his prolonged frontal nudity does not deter her from accomplishing her mission. Normally that would mean a romp in the sack. She reluctantly admits there is another man in her life. On the advice of a friend, Peter takes a vacation get-away to Hawaii. Before he can finish checking in, Peter sees Sarah there with her new boyfriend, rock star Aldous (Russell Brand). The funniest part of the film involves Aldous, who is stuck on himself, is a self righteous recovering alcoholic, a lousy singer and a worse dancer. Still, with all that, he’s a nice guy. Relationships go somewhat as expected with break ups and make ups. Some find this humor laugh-out-loud funny (e.g., Wedding Crashers) but to us much of the humor was on par with a SNL skit: pretty funny for a little while but after 45 minutes it has the feeling of forced laughter. Sarah remains an ice queen on her best days. Rachel (Mila Kunis) was uplifting to the point that the movie was at times enjoyable. She and Peter had a hint of the chemistry between Hanks/Ryan in “You’ve Got Mail.” In the end, Peter, while a reformed dork, is still a dork not worthy of Rachel. Possibly the biggest issue with the comedy is that 3 of the 4 lead characters are not that likeable and therefore not very funny. A forgettable movie.
