A little gem

What becomes of retired jewel thieves? Do they simply sail off into the sunset of a tropical island? Or is there always the allure of that one last heist?

Max and Lola (Pierce Brosnan and Salma Hayek) scored big when they got away with the second of the three famous Napoleon diamonds; leaving baffled FBI agent Stan Lloyd (Woody Harrelson) holding the bag, or more accurately, the empty steel case. Now sailing into plain view of their island paradise is a cruise ship, with the coveted third Napoleon diamond on board.

Also taking up residence on Paradise Island for the week that the ship is in port is Agent Lloyd. He’s certain that Max and Lola plan to grab the stone. And he gladly teams up with lovely local cop Sophie (Naomie Harris) for a fast and furious relationship that also turns into a not surprising but humorous friendship for the four of them. After all, they have a lot in common ¾ the chase, the pursuit, the diamond.

Raconteur Henri Mooré (Don Cheadle), who hails from Detroit and admits to "…adding the little thing to the ‘e’" on his name, wants Max to steal the diamond for him to finance his new casino, as a way to help the island people.

The game is set and the players are in motion. In luxurious beachfront homes and hotels, and under the crystal waters of the Caribbean, distraction is the key. Of course, there are better heist movies ¾ the classic, "Rififi," "The Heist," "The Italian Job," and both "Ocean’s 11," for starters. But you can’t beat the beautiful cast and setting here.

This colorful caper sparkles. It was such fun, director Ratner says he ready for the sequel.
