30 Second Bottom Line: If the "Matrix Reloaded" was too philosophical for you or if "X-Men 2" had too many underpinning social commentaries going on for you, turn your brain off, strap in & enjoy this ride.
Story Line: When we last saw Officer Brian O'Conner two years ago, he was in Las Angeles letting Dominic Toretto (played by Vin Disel) go scott free. As a direct result he can now be found in Florida racing cars for money. When the U.S. customs department busts Brian after a race, he is given the choice of either helping them bring down smuggler Carter Verone or he can go to jail. O'Conner gets the customs folks to allow him to bring in the partner of his choice, which was childhood chum turned convicted felon Roman Pearce.
"Rom" is reluctant to offer his assistance as he blames O'Conner for his arrest & subsequent jail stretch 3 years ago. In the event that that plot outline was too difficult to follow, take heart because that's about as challenging as this story gets. There is a little tying up of a loose end or two from the first movie (Fast & Furious), but not so much that if you didn't see the first one you can't follow this film. Of course O'Conner & Rom eventually come to settle their differences. Seriously though, this movie is about men with muscles & deep voices, REAL fast cars of all makes and colors, danger, violence & GORGEOUS, scantily clad women looking "Miamilicous"!!
Tell Me More About It: There were these guys, in my high school who no matter what period it was, what time it was, no matter what class I was going to or coming from, they were ALWAYS in the auto shop. Not too sure what ever became of them but for them & for people like them (& in the same age range-back then at least, they're probably all over 30 now) this movie is their Citizen Kane!
Simply put this movie is what it is. There are some things that this movie does exceptionally well however. Primarily it overcame one major obstacle: speed is a hard thing to convey through a medium; you have to physically be there to really appreciate it & I thought that Singleton did a great job overcoming that & making the speed "feelable".
This movie's not trying to be art; it goes for its demographic & shoots straight for the pituitary gland. None of the performances were stellar, but none of them disappointed. This movie isn't for everyone which somewhat explains the mediocre rating. That said, watching the commercials on television do this one justice. If you like the ads & you live your life one-quarter mile at a time, you'll like this movie.
Rated PG-13 for street racing, violence, language and some sensuality.
