30 Second Bottom Line: The lines of fantasy & reality are blurred to tell an ancient tale of power, greed, love, mystery & triumph.

Story Line:  Set in 12th century Japan, a time when demons & spirits roamed the earth along side of man.   Onmyoji tells the story of the "Ying-Yang Masters" a group of wise men in the city of Kyoto who the town looked to for guidance and answers as they were well educated in the ways of mathematics, astrology & the like.  Among the masters was Seimei who kept his fellow masters in awe with his magical prowess.  Seimei was commissioned to keep the peace as turmoil descended on the town when an evil master attempts to rise up, destroy the existing royal structure & create overall chaos.  Helping Seimei is a young swordsman by the name of Hiromasa whose admiration of Seimei sometimes transcended admiration & wandered into a strange kind of love at times.  The odds become decidedly uneven when our nemesis conjurers up the powers of an ancient evil for himself & the classic battle between good and evil ensues.

Tell Me More About It:  I have to be honest, this is in no way shape or form my type of movie, a little bit too artsy for my very simple taste.  Having said that, this movie is as aesthetically pleasing as any movie I have ever seen.  The demonic effects were wonderful without utilizing heavy-handed computer graphics.  The vibrancy of the colors, the costumes & of course the geographic beauty of Japan itself made up with eye candy what the script lacked in sense.  "Onmyoji" even included a brief "boy-girl" love story that wasn't really followed all the way through in my opinion, but wasn't necessarily out of place.  Overall they're some really incredible elements in this movie, but don't let my compliments fool you.  You have to be into movies like this one to fully enjoy it.
