Showcase of old and new films from Latin and South America
|
The 19th Annual Latino Film Festival is underway in Chicago, showcasing many new films and featuring a tribute to two of Latin America's best-known actors, Katy Jurado and María Félix. Both actresses died last year and a representative sample of their films will be shown. Among Félix' films is the 1946 classic melodrama Enamorata, also starring Pedro Almendáriz. Set during an idealized vision of the Mexican revolution, she plays the headstrong and independent Beatriz, daughter of a well-to-do townsman whose riches are confiscated for the cause as the rebels prepare for an attack by the Federales. Directed by Emilio Fernández this lively and comic romantic drama showcases Félix ageless beauty in numerous close ups as she willingly gets caught up in the revolution and in love with a rebel leader.
Another notable offering is The Archangels Feather, a new film from Venezuelan director Luis Munoz. This is an allegorical tale of a would-be angel who comes to a remote and picturesque village in the mountains of Venezuela to replace the recently deceased telegrapher. As virtually the only contact with the larger world and the autocratic central government, he uses the power of words sent and received in the telegrams to direct events and change lives of the inhabitants. Signing the telegrams with a faded feather from an archangel's wing while dressed in a white suit that emanates a faint halo-like glow, Gabriel gently turns things upside down in the village that has been dominated by local corruption and bullied by the scoundrel son of the governor.
This whimsical and winning tale not only combines elements of the cultural and religious supernatural but also luminously presents the beauty of the South American mountain village and its surrounding landscape, one of this film's most prominent and charming aspects. The festival continues through April 16, 2003 at The Biograph Theatre, The Three Penny, and Facets Multimedia.
