Life often imitates art, or more specifically in my case, drama. I was born in Chicago, but I grew up along the eastern seaboard of the United States, as my father was a career naval petty officer. He was a Pearl Harbor survivor who went on to a second career after retiring from the navy, and he died in 1992.
Mother's main concern was keeping me, and later on my younger brother, caught up on whatever the educational focus was of our current school system. I attended schools in Florida, Georgia, Virginia, Connecticut, Massachusetts and a couple of other places. Two of the three high schools I went to fell into the “separate but equal” category as they were in the south. Literally, the facades of the schools appeared almost identical, but, of course, one was for black students and the other for white. Mom's now happy with the academic progress of her two young adult grandchildren and her three young great-grandsons.
My love of writing developed early and the requisite stint on the high school year book staff followed. Another fun, but short-lived, interest was acting in high school and college. My degree is in Radio, TV & Film. That's where my love of film was born.
Another love came into my life at that time as well. I met George. We were married in 1964, and among many other creations we are co-founders, editors and reviewers for www.reelmoviecritic.com. This is a labor of love born from many years of holiday newsletters to friends with our “Top Pics” for movies. Conversations often begin with folks asking us “What have you seen lately that's good?”
I worked as a segment producer and on-air talent for a magazine format TV show. I've also written TV news copy. For five years I owned a small business in the Chicago area.
My non-fiction writing deals primarily with family issues, I suppose because I've enjoyed a 36-year `run' with my husband, George. Contemporary African American themes predominate in my short stories.
Our experiences and travels have led us back to Chicago, where we enjoy the full embrace of family and lower long distance phone bills. Our daughter, son-in-law and three grandsons live nearby, as does my mother. Our son is not far away. My brother, an Emmy winning director for news and documentaries, lives with his son and daughter just a short distance from us. We are definitely part of the “sandwich generation.”
Our interests are diverse. We see the world from many perspectives and we will entreat you to join us in exploring it through film, books and just plain enjoying life.
