Cutting edge yet still in our comfort zone

Between Friday, December 6th and Thursday, December 13th, Facets Multimedia will present 11 French films by new filmmakers. This is the only such event in North America. In addition to the films, there is a panel discussion on December 7 on "Sexual Politics in Contemporary French Cinema." Also on that date, a Q and A with filmmaker Yann Dedet follows the showing of his film "The Land of the Singing Dog," which premiered in Cannes earlier this year. Wrapping up the festival is a dance party featuring New York based DJ Neil Aline at the "White Star" nightclub.
Opening the festival is Audrey Tautou ("Amelie") in "He Loves Me, He Love Me Not…" a dark romantic thriller. "Very Opposite Sexes" follows four couples dealing with a variety of romantic entanglements. "An Outgoing Woman" features Agnes Jaoui ("The Taste of Others") who separates from her husband when she learns of his affair. Now on her own as a single working mother, things spiral out of control as this story develops into a strong psychological drama. "God is Great, I'm Not," stars Audrey Tautou in a charming romantic comedy. "Seventeen Times" is the story of a woman coping with the tragic death of her husband, told in 17 snapshot moments: an Official Selection at Cannes.
A Moroccan immigrant's dreams of fancy Parisian night life versus the harsh reality of black market jobs and unpleasant living conditions, is exposed in "Blame it on Voltaire." "Hair under the Roses" is a fresh
coming of age film, a French specialty. "The Crossing," a documentary, follows a young man in search of his father, an American serviceman, stationed in France in the 1960's, who left his pregnant girlfriend when he was reassigned.
