30 Second Bottom Line: You see the punches coming a mile away but it's still a knockout!
Story Line: Sandra Bullock plays Lucy Kelson, a Harvard educated lawyer who devotes her time and talent to saving society from itself. She takes every opportunity she can to protest corporate America's greed and the destruction of the more homey aspects of society such as family and community. Unlike most people who go to Harvard Law School, Lucy isn't concerned about making a large amount of money.
Now for every yin, there is a yang, Lucy's yang is George, played by Hugh Grant. Someone who needs money like a dope fiend needs a fix! He's an excess junkie, lives the high life and loves every second of it. Lucy's latest cause is the preservation of a community center on Coney Island that's slated for demolition by George's multi-billion dollar corporation. George is desperate for a lawyer and Lucy is desperate to save the community center. They reach a compromise, Lucy agrees to work for George, and George agrees to keep the community center alive.
What follows is George's insistence to have Lucy's input on every component of his life, including calling her on her cell phone as she serves as a bridesmaid at her best friend's wedding, to pick out a suit for him! The tension builds and builds, and eventually explodes, as everyone in the theater knows it will. Then they get back together, as everyone in the theater knows they will. But the performances of this movie totally make up for its predictability.
Tell Me More About It: I don't want to like Hugh Grant, I'm not entirely sure why, I just don't want to. Not sure if it was the floppy hair he had back in the day, or his one trick pony, self-deprecating type of humor. Having said all that, I have to admit, the last two movies of his I've seen, ("Two Weeks Notice" & "About a Boy") I've really enjoyed, and his performances in them. This movie really plays to Grant & Bullock's strengths. This movie allows Grant to be charming and a smart-ass, and allows Bullock to be her strong, adorable self. The writing is sharp and funny, and the supporting performances are good. This is a highly enjoyable movie.
Rated PG-13 for some sex-related humor.
