30 Second Bottom Line: In the year 2087, Eddie Murphy (Pluto Nash) is a successful owner of the hottest nightclub on the moon. When he refuses to sell the nightclub to a mysterious criminal mastermind, Rex Crater, he finds himself in trouble with the Mafia and he tries to escape from them with the help of his new coworker Dina (Rosario Dawson).
Story Line: Pluto Nash is an ex-convict who for the past seven years has owned the hottest nightclub on the moon, a.k.a. Little America. At the peak of his success, he finds himself in trouble when he refuses to sell his club to a member of the Mafia named Mogan (Joe Pantoliano) for ten million dollars. As Pluto soon finds out, Mogan is a henchman for the most dangerous criminal on the moon, the mysterious Rex Crater. In fear of his life Pluto tries to protect himself while searching for Rex Crater.
Joining in the adventure is a beautiful earthling co-worker named Dina, and Pluto's robot bodyguard Bruno (Randy Quaid). Along the way we meet Pluto's mom (Pam Grier), a pool shark named Rowland (Peter Boyle) and an Italian singer named Tony Francis (Jay Mohr). That
pretty much sums up this thin plot in this extremely thin movie.
Tell Me More About It: The Adventures of Pluto Nash is a horrible movie. There is a bad script, bad acting, bad special effects, and bad editing. This is by far the worst movie I have seen in the past year. What was Castle Rock thinking when they green lighted this motion picture with an eighty million dollar budget? Who knows? It is truly scary to even think that some Hollywood executive thought this would make a good film.
Even scarier is the fact that this film has an amazing cast! What was Eddie Murphy, one of the most talented comedians of all time, thinking when he said `'yes'' to this film? Sure his last film, `'Showtime,'' was bad, but that was an Academy Award winner compared to this garbage. The list goes on - Joe Pantoliano, Luiz Guzman, Peter Boyle, Pam Grier, Randy Quaid, Jay Mohr, John Cleese and even Alec Baldwin! This is probably one of the most impressive casts I have seen in a while…and for what? This movie wastes an hour and a half of everyone who sees it!
I am truly outraged by the waste of talent in this film. The screenwriter, Neil Cuthbert, should be deeply regretful for writing a script with no good dialogue or good jokes (O.K, maybe one chuckle in the whole entire movie). It is no wonder to me that this movie was put on the shelf for two years and that the reason I am reviewing it now is because it wasn't advance screened for critics. I wonder why that could be.
The reasons that I am giving this film a half-star are because I liked seeing so many actors I like in one movie at the same time. What also contributed to my rating were maybe one laugh and the imagination it took to create a futuristic city on the moon. Besides that, pure garbage, a waste of anyone's perfectly good day!
The editing in this movie is at times so bad, I felt as if I was watching a bootleg or amateur film. Also, the acting in this film was horrible, except for a funny cameo by Alec Baldwin (by the way, this is the one funny part that I mentioned earlier in the review). The special effects sometimes looked cartoonish and well, I already addressed my feelings about the script.
I like Eddie Murphy a lot, as well as most of this extremely impressive cast, but please, I am asking anyone who is reading this review not to see this movie! It is a waste of your time and money. Instead, go rent a good Eddie Murphy film such as Coming to America or Beverly Hills Cop.
Rating PG-13 (violence; language)
