30 Second Bottom Line: One of the minds behind the academy award winning writing of such successful films as "Traffic," as well as award winning TV shows like "The Practice" & "NYPD Blue," lays an egg with what could have been a decent film.
Story Line: Katie Holmes plays Catherine, a lifetime overachiever in her senior year at an elite college, & finishing her thesis is the least of her issues. Meanwhile, the case of the mysterious two-year disappearance of her ex-boyfriend is put in the lap of a recovering alcoholic cop Wade Handler, played by Benjamin Bratt. During Bratt's investigation he finds himself growing closer to Catherine & in so doing brings himself closer to solving the mystery than he ever could have expected.
Tell Me More About It: I went into this movie thinking it was going to suck rocks. I thought for sure it was going to be a twenty something "I know what you did Last Summer/Scream/Valentine" wanna-be, psychological thriller, piece of junk. What I got (in the beginning) was actually a smart, thorough, well acted movie. Then somewhere along the line the movie began to confirm my original expectations. I can't exactly tell you at what point in the film it happened, because I'm not totally sure myself; I can only tell you that it lost its way, & basically lost the steam & momentum created at the beginning. The performances were a surprise to me; particularly the strong supporting cast. And as you can expect from a Stephen Gaghan movie, the cinematography does a wonderful job relating to the psychology of the film¾but man did this movie let me down.
Rated PG-13 for drug and alcohol content, sexuality, some violence and language.
