One year to the day after the crash of Flight 180 in the original Final Destination, Kimberly (A.J. Cook) is on her way to Florida for spring break. Just in case you think that the sweet front she gives her father is for real, her girlfriend makes a joke that they have both their swimsuits and condoms. When they pick up their boyfriends, the guys start smoking from a large bag of pot. Helping to set up this date movie, one of the guys pulls a Jack Black moment when a biker chick flashes her breasts at him from a passing motorcycle.
Before getting onto a freeway ramp, Kimberly has a premonition of death and destruction, played out with crashes, explosions and flying body parts on Hwy 23 that earn this picture's R rating in the early moments of the film. Like Clear Rivers (Ali Larter) in " Final Destination," Kimberly is a survivor of "death's grand design." When Officer Burke (Michael Lande) saves her life, Kimberly soon realizes that there are other people that were supposed to be killed in the accidents on Hwy 23 who are still living.
Ah hah! Now we know who the targets are for the rest of the movie. What we don't know is the sequence of death and how the deed will be done. They tend to be non-believers until lottery winner Evan (David Paetkau) meets an "untimely" death, which makes super skeptical Eugene (T.C. Carson) begin to wonder.
Although the deaths are horrific, director David R. Ellis and his team used fantastic cinematography and special effects that walked the fine line of not being overkill (pun intended). Most meet their demise going about their usual tasks at home, keeping appointments, or cooking BBQ in the back yard. In general, just minding your own beeswax rather than being attacked by a serial killer or some deranged type of violence.
If death has a grand design with you in its cross hairs, you won't just die in your sleep. Instead, you'll become a headline on the evening news. "Final Destination 2" is complete, but as Kimberly says once she realizes what's going on, "It's not over yet."
