"Seabiscuit" for pre teens
|
In Northern Africa, a beautiful young black stallion has to fend for himself after his mother is taken into captivity from the wild. When bandits attack a traveling caravan, Neera (Biana Tamimi) escapes and comes across the young stallion. They become friends when she cups water in her hands to help the horse. When she arrives at her home, where she lives with her grandfather, they all think that the horse is a figment of her imagination, much like other mirages she had seen.
A key cultural event in the nearby town is an annual winner-take-all horse race. It's held shortly after Neera's return home. Her family does not have an entry for the current year but when Neera rediscovers the black stallion a year later, she enters the race, hiding her hair and her face heavily veiled so that no one knows that she is a girl. In 1946, when the film is set, it was truly a man's world.
As in the movie "Seabiscuit," the rider and horse must bond in their training to be competitive in the upcoming race. The horse race is dramatic and the outcome should not be in doubt.
With stunning photography, this G rated Disney family film is perfect for preteens, especially for young girls.
