There's no prescription for love
|
Harry Langer (Nicholson) is a 63-year-old millionaire, several times over, and aside from his many accomplishments, he is probably the nation's foremost authority on younger women. In the 40 years that he's been researching the subject, he probably hasn't dated a woman near his own age since his study began. He's a mogul who wields his power, money and charm to the hilt and has no shame in it whatsoever.
His latest study involves Marin Barry (Amanda Peet) who invites him to her mother's house in the Hamptons for a weekend of sex, which leads to a night in the hospital due to a mild heart attack. Langer's doctor (Keanu Reeves) prescribes a few pills, and more importantly rest and zero travel for him, which means the rich city boy is stuck in the rural Hamptons. And not only will Harry not be having sex, he will be in the care of the mother of the young woman he came out there to have sex with, Erica Barry (Diane Keaton). Definitely not the weekend he envisioned.
Harry develops an odd attraction to the lady who spent most of her time during their initial meeting chastising almost everything about his lifestyle. As the days roll along Harry's health improves and he and Erica fell in love, to the great surprise of both of them. However, there is the not so small fact that Harry has never, ever been in love, and would probably have an easier time telling you of the history of the word monogamy than he would have practicing it. It stands to reason that a younger person probably wouldn't have a problem with an arrangement like that, or at the very least, less of a problem than would a 57 year old woman.
I really enjoyed this movie. I enjoy action movies and occasional low-brow comedies just as much as the next guy, but few things make for a great time at the movies than to see two great actors reading smart lines, going back and forth making it look completely effortless. Anyone who's seen enough bad acting will really have an appreciation for the wonderful performances turned in by Nicholson and Keaton. The writing style of Nancy Meyers, promoting strong female lead characters bounced off perfectly off Mr. Machismo himself, Jack Nicholson. I highly recommend this movie for its wit, intelligence and humor, enjoy.
