Mack Bates
Mack Bates credits the 1991 Ridley Scott film "Thelma & Louise" with reconfirming his long-held desire to become a filmmaker in his own right, and he is currently a senior at the University of Wisconsin, majoring in Film and Film Studies, with a minor in Journalism and Mass Communications
Mack's currently pulling double duty as Film Editor and staff writer for one of his school's student newspapers, The Leader. He also freelances for the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.
In 2000, Mack was the proud recipient of an award from the Milwaukee Press Club's inaugural Journalistic Excellence Competition College Awards, which honored print, television and radio reporting executed by Wisconsin college students in 1999. He was awarded an Honorable Mention in the category of Best Single Feature Story (print) for "Simply the Best: Susan Sarandon," an exclusive interview he conducted with the Oscar-winning actress, which ran in the December 6, 1999 issue of The Leader.
In 2001, Mack went on to win the First Place prize at the Milwaukee Press Club Awards for Best Critical Review of the Arts (print), for his review of the film "Pay It Forward."
In ten years, Mack sees himself with both a BFA and a MFA in Film and Film Studies. He also plans to have a production company up and running. Stationed in either Los Angeles or New York, because "that's where all the film work is -- or perhaps Canada, where film and television production is booming big time! I'll be doing what I've dreamed about doin for as long as I can remember: directing, writing and producing projects for both the big and small screen."
