Some wag once said that black films wouldn't be considered equal to other films until black filmmakers felt that they no longer believed that they had the need to "prove" themselves and simply be free to make films as bad as white filmmakers. If that's the case, then director Sacha Parisot's "Skin Deep" proves that full equality has come at last.
Ludicrous and illogical, "Skin Deep," a would-be erotic thriller with no eroticism or thrills to be found anywhere, desperately wants to be a suspenseful murder mystery, loaded with all sorts of unexpected twists and turns. Unfortunately, Parisot's very obvious screenplay (you can guess what's going to happen every step of the way before it does) with its lame dialogue, and saddled with some truly awful acting, features a plot that gets dumber with each passing minute. "Skin Deep" is more of an embarrassment than a genuine thriller.
The film deals with two couples, one going through some hard marital difficulties and the other a wild, freaky pair with a taste for experimentation, spend a lazy afternoon relaxing on the patio. Before long, one of the partners is found face down at the bottom of a Jacuzzi, which starts off a series of boneheaded actions and accusations that are more laughable than suspenseful. Added to this mix is the neighborhood crazed stalker mistress of one of the husbands, who always seems to appear at the worst times and who's only purpose is evidently to make things more ridiculous. Thanks to the stupid plot and over-the-top acting (the worst offender being Mad TV regular Debra Wilson, in various states of undress as the wacko mistress), "Skin Deep" leaps to the top of the heap of other lousy black erotic thrillers (such as the unintentional laugh riot, "Trois"), as a must avoid.
