Bottom Line:
" Pistol Opera" is a stylish thriller directed by the trash auteur Seijun Suzuki. The plot involves a female assassin who is ranked the third best and wants to move up to number #1.
Story Line:
Miyuki, who is nicknamed the black cat, is a beautiful killing machine. She does what should be a routine hit but complications arise. A sniper starts shooting at her, and she returns his gunfire and kills him. But a young girl named Sayoko witnesses the incident and the normally heartless Miyuki cannot bring herself to kill her. It turns out that Sayoko looks up to Miyuki, and wants to grow up to be an assassin, as well. Later, Sayoko is informed that there is turmoil in the assassin ranks, and the hit men are killing each other to rise in the ranks.
Tell Me More:
"Pistol Opera" is a remake of Suzuki's "Branded to Kill," which was made in 1967. It's flashier and artier than the original but not quite as impressive.
Suzuki's work has inspired many prominent directors such as Jim Jarmusch, John Woo, and Quentin Tarantino.
Not Rated- for mature audiences
