Sexy soap opera

Lucia:  Paz Vega
Lorenzo:  Tristan Ulloa
Elena: Najwa Nimri
Belen:  Elena Anaya
Director:  Julio Medem

30 Second Bottom Line: A dream-like tale about a writer who had the best sex of his life with a beautiful stranger, in the ocean off an idyllic Spanish island, on the night of his twenty-fourth birthday, under the haunting light of a full moon.  He returns to his home in Madrid and easily moves in with a sexy fan of his.  Meanwhile, a child was conceived that night in the ocean and the writer discovers the little girl, Luna, now four years old, in Madrid.  He becomes sexually involved with her caretaker and a tragedy occurs, pulling the lives of his girlfriend, Luna's mother and his own inextricably together.

Story Line:  The moon is an insidious force in this film, manipulating the lives of people just as it influences the tides of the ocean.  There is an element of unavoidable fate in this soap opera of a film, overfilled with sex and drama.

The story is of a writer, Lorenzo (Tristan Ulloa), who has a one-night romance in the water off a remote and desolate Spanish island.  Returning to Madrid he hooks up with a waitress, Lucia (Paz Vega), a fan of his, for some passionate sexual romps.  On their first day of meeting they move in together and their lovemaking begins.  She

ultimately asks him what his most wonderful sexual experience has been and he talks about his one night encounter with another woman, an unnamed stranger from this remote island (most men would justifiably be shot for talking in bed about their most wonderful sexual experience with someone else).

Lorenzo coincidentally learns of his child conceived that night, who with her mother, now lives in Madrid.  He seeks the child out at the playground and begins an affair with her baby sitter.  During a sexual escapade in the child's home, while the mother is out for the evening, a tragedy occurs.  The mother ultimately moves back to the island, Lucia moves to the island and Lorenzo follows.  Their lives become intertwined there under the ever-present haunting full moon.

Tell Me More About It: The film is beautifully shot, with great dramatic contrasts of light and dark creating a mystical atmosphere.  Unfortunately, there is little pull to the story itself.  It seems simply to be a hanger on which we find great cinematography, erotic sex scenes and some quality acting.  The story has the artificial drama of a contrived soap opera, making the film basically forgettable, with little intrigue or message.

The director, who also wrote the screenplay, actually merged two screenplays into one to create this film.  Perhaps that caused the problem.  Instead of two stories, we don't get much of a story at all.  Its main focus seems to be the steamy sex scenes and dramatic island landscapes.
