30 Second Bottom Line: A process server (that person who delivers the dreaded divorce/subpoena papers) falls for one of his targets.
Story Line: Matthew Perry gets to shamelessly mug and try out various impersonations (a New York gas man, a snooty gay Brit, a suave gambler) as he frantically delivers "process papers" to an assortment of losers. The first to admit that his "…job sucks, with no future, no benefits," Perry livens his life by competing for assignments with Mafia-type colleague Tony and antagonizing his boss, played by the flamboyant Cedric the Entertainer. After stunning Sara (Hurley) with divorce papers, Perry is coerced by the furious woman scorned to work for her and to instead deliver papers to her cheating hubby. Apparently whoever gets papers first suffers the most financial setback.
There is the usual running around, with various disguises and convoluted schemes to get the duo close to their prey. In the meantime, co-worker Tony is out to best Perry at his game in order to get him fired by the increasingly agitated (though always well dressed) Cedric.
Of course, no one needs me to reveal how this predictable goof-fest ends. Cedric charms Hurley into bed and Perry declares his love for fine wine and Tony. Just kidding….
Tell Me More About It: "Serving Sara" is a blatant attempt to cash in on the star power of Matthew Perry and Elizabeth Hurley. Hoping fans are too stupid to notice the idiocy of this plot, the filmmakers are betting that Perry can ride on the frenzy of "Friends" and Hurley can hide her absence of acting talent behind a bodacious bod and the memory of Austin Powers.
Perhaps the screenwriters thought that a script that involves a process server was the height of originality. Too bad the whole, convoluted notion needs a large explanatory footnote. This legal angle seems crazy in an era of high-speed technology.
The real tip off? The whole thing is set amidst Christmas decorations-lights, wreaths and garland. Obviously this one has been on the shelf awhile. Not at all surprising.
