30 Second Bottom Line: This National Lampoon meets blaxploitation film is surprisingly HILARIOUS!
Story Line: As the movie spells out for us in the beginning, the 60's were a time of great awakening in the black community. The decades to follow did more to diffuse that energy than build on it, and as it turns out the one responsible for that is none other than "the man,"-yes, that man.
Undercover Brother's life mission is to bring the man down and build his community up. To achieve that end he joins up with The B.R.O.T.H.E.R.H.O.O.D, to bring down "the man." You read that right, all the years of black people's theories of conspiracies by "the man" to bring down the black man were completely correct. The NBA did put the 3-point line in to keep white boys in the game, there is a plot against Spike Lee in Hollywood, and O.J. is innocent¾okay, no one is expecting you to suspend your disbelief that much.
Tell Me More About It: Watching the previews for this movie, I felt
as if the filmmakers were expecting this to be Eddie Griffin's break-out role and while he doesn't disappoint, this movie went from entertaining to flat out funny on the strength of the supporting cast. Denise Richards is in her element here, easily her finest role since "Wild Things" with Nev Campbell (and that wasn't her finest role because of her acting¾go out and rent it, you'll see what I mean!). Hopefully she'll get the hint¾be sexy, be funny. Put on some tight clothes and don't try and be smart…we're just not buyin' it! Did you see her in that Bond movie, "The World Is Not Enough," trying to pass as a NUCLEAR SCIENTIST!? C'mon…that insulted me! Neil Patrick Harris, of Doogie Howser fame, was hilarious and the "token white guy" (don't think there's ever been a token white guy in an all black movie who wasn't the bad guy).
Anyone familiar with Dave Chappelle knows how funny he is and Chris Kattan was funnier in this movie than he's been on "Saturday Night Live" lately, and way funnier than he was in that steamy, pile of crap of a movie "Corky Romano." Fine performances were also delivered by Aunjanue Ellis (Men of Honor) and Chi McBride from TV's "Boston Public."
Aside from being funny and doing a great job playing on all the action movie cliché's and urban pop-culture references, this film has a message. The movie's characters all learn that "The B.R.O.T.H.E.R.H.O.O.D" stands for more than afros and raised black fists…it stands for brotherhood. All colors and sexes working together to fight injustice.
If I had higher expectations of this movie, I might have given it 4 stars, but because I was SO surprised, I'll give it 3 because I can see how a movie this deliciously funny and ridiculous could be over some folk's heads and beneath the standards of others. But for those of us who haven't had something crawl up our butts and die recently, I would suggest you go out and see this one. The question isn't if you'll laugh, but how loud.
Rated PG-13 for profanity, comedic violence and mild sexuality
