XXX
In "XXX" Vin Diesel is Xander "XXX" Cage, a notorious underground thrill seeker and extreme sports star, who has two strikes under the California Judicial system. NSA agent Gibbons (Samuel L. Jackson) tells Xander that he has just received his third strike for driving a politician's car off a bridge before parachuting out of it. To avoid a life in prison, Xander, who is both dangerous and smart, is forced to infiltrate a ruthless Russian crime ring called Anarchy 99. Led by criminally insane Yorgi (Martin Csokas) and his beautiful sidekick Yelena (Asia Agento), Anarchy 99's goal is to leak lethal substances all over Europe in order to create the next world war.
Xander completes a series of insane tests, and he's off to Prague on his assignment. Sure it sounds corny, but this is the kind of movie where sometimes laughing at the plot doesn't deteriorate from the movie whatsoever. There is also the obligatory sidekick, the love interest (Asia Agento) and the nervous boss (Samuel L. Jackson).
XXX is the anti-superhero of the 21st century, a cross between James Bond and an X-Games star, with cool gadgets, cool women, and cool cars. He is what every woman wants and what every man wants to be. XXX is so popular as an underground extreme sports star that even one of Yorgi's henchmen asks, "Can I have an autograph?"
This is a pure popcorn summer movie, and at doing its best to entertain, it doesn't fail in the least. The action sequences are there for high octane, heart-pumping thrills, and for the most part they succeed because some are really quite imaginative and have never been done before. Director Rob Cohen succeeds at capturing incredible feats of action. Though some of the action scenes are ludicrous and over the top, but in this film about world domination, what else can you expect?
Sure, there are some loopholes of logic in the film, but that doesn't matter. Are there faults? Yes, to begin with the extremely loud rock music that plays throughout many of the scenes that is quite annoying. Yet overall, this film is an entertaining piece. This is a visually stunning, action extravaganza with special effects that are sure to make this one of summer's standout blockbusters.
"XXX" isn't about trying to win an Oscar for best picture; it's only purposes are to make Vin Diesel the star he has long been destined to become and to display cool action sequences one after another. Speaking of Vin Diesel, this is his best and largest role to date. After seeing him in `'Boiler Room'' and then last year's `'The Fast and the Furious," I knew he would become Hollywood's next `'it'' action star. His mysterious ethnic background only helps his persona, and he generates so much coolness, it's almost like watching a modern Steve McQueen. In "XXX" he becomes the epitome of badassness, a clever street thug who can outwit the most dangerous crime ring in the world, without breaking a sweat.
Rated PG-13 for violence, non-stop action sequences, sensuality, drug content and language
