30 Second Bottom Line: As thrillers go, this is a real performance- driven piece, but the squeamish will jump and the gore-mongers will go home disappointed. Standout performances abound in this film and Bill Paxton's directing debut is a memorable one.
Story Line: Frailty is the story of two generations of WHACK-JOBS "On a mission from God," but the Blues Brothers this AIN'T!
The movie begins with brief chronicles of a serial killer who goes by the handle "God's hands." Matthew McConaughey shows up at FBI headquarters in Dallas alleging to know the identity of the "God's hands" killer, claiming to be the killer's brother. He runs down his very weird family tree to FBI Agent Doyle played by Powers Boothe.
The movie then follows McConaughey's character from childhood to adulthood. Things are normal in the family until Dad Meiks (Bill Paxton) gets a visit from an angel instructing him to "destroy the demons of the world," who just happen to be walking around as regular people.
Tell Me More About It: It's hard to say much because this story throws more curves than Kerry Woods, but I will say that if you can be patient through the slow moments of the movie, you can sit back and enjoy some really great performances, particularly by the youngsters Matt O'Leary and Jeremy Sumpter. Also, a big thumbs up to Bill Paxton in his directing debut. Great cinematography, great performances; a better score would have made this a 4-star film. But aside from the pace, this is a very good film.
Rated R for horror/religious/metaphysical violence and some language
