30 Second Bottom Line: Mystery, Inc. breaks up to make up in this movie that might make the new generation of Scooby fans happy but the original Scooby fans may be disappointed.
Story Line: The boys and girls of Mystery, Inc. all decide to branch out and go off on their own, only to be drawn back together to solve a (gasp) mystery!
Tell Me More About It: Growing up, I always felt there was a little something different about Velma; that Fred and Daphne were idiots, and even as a kid, I knew that Shaggy was on something! Overall, I thought the entire group was a bunch of wimps. Having said that, I grew up liking the animated Scooby Doo. I grew to LOVE Scooby Doo when Scrappy Doo got thrown in the mix. You remember Scrappy? Scooby's nephew, always imploring who ever was holding him back to "let me at `em, let me at `em!"
Around that time they also added canned laughter and poorly penned appearances by Don Knotts and the Harlem Globetrotters. That began
to get on my nerves, but I put up with it because it was nice to FINALLY have someone on board with Mystery, Inc. who wasn't a quivering coward. Well, in this movie Scrappy is credited as being the divisive element in Mystery, Inc., which supposedly drives a wedge in the group (never mind the fact that Fred and Daphne are egomaniacs and Scooby and Shaggy are more than likely eating every dime they make).
Anyway, I suppose my biggest problem with this movie is that I was really hoping for this movie to "out" Velma, I was hoping for an intervention for Shaggy's substance abuse problem (seriously, if you were that skinny and CONSTANTLY had the munchies, what would people think of you?). Why, if they were setting this movie in modern times, does Fred walk around with an ascot? Why is Daphne always caught by the bad guy? All questions that we "big kids" want the answers to after years of asking. But instead this feature goes right for the Cartoon Network crowd with a cute movie starring a charming, but soul-less computer animated Scooby.
Little kids might like this movie, and the ones in the theater I was in seemed to. In fairness, the commercials for "Scooby Doo" pretty much lead you to believe that's what they are going for. This is one to see after you go see "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron," wait for "Lilo and Stitch" to come out, go see "Monsters Inc." again, rent "Harry Potter," take a nap, wash your car…then go see it.
Rated PG for parental guidance-and I have NO idea why
