Scary Movie 2 scarcely funny

Cindy: Anna Faris
Ray: Shawn Wayans
Shorty: Marlon Wayans
Jamie Lee: Kathleen Robertson
Brenda: Regina Hall
Priest: James Woods
Father Kerris: Andy Richter
Hanson: Chris Elliott
Jasonia: Natasha Lyonne
Director: Keenen Ivory Wayans

30 Second Bottom Line: This is a "hard R" rated movie version of TV's Saturday Night Live, with a big budget and plenty of CGI. There are lots of quick punch lines and short skits all in the muddle-uh middle-of a story about documenting life after death.

Story Line: Anna Faris and Regina Hall are two of the good things going for this sequel who also appeared in the original Scary Movie. Kathleen Robertson provides the kick that Carmen Electra did in the prior film and James Woods is fantastic as he mocks the priest in the Exorcist at the beginning of the film.

What is funny here would be spoiled if I told you anything about it, so I'll keep my comments very brief. Much of the humor is either in your face to the point that it stops being funny or so subtle that you might never get it. If you do, chances are that your mind is trying to shift gears from what you just saw to what you are seeing in the new moment.

For example, there are times when there is a flood of vomit or sperm that waaaaaaaaaay more than makes the point. Then in the next scene, the people with all this gook on them are perfectly clean as if it never happened!! What's up with that? This is the mental level of the film. At the other end of the spectrum are things that you might miss unless you are politically aware, such as references to sperm on a black dress, defective tires on Ford SUV's and missing ballots in Florida.

Tell Me More About It: I gave Scary Movie a rating of three stars because it was funny. This one gets one star because it's not. The things that worked best in the original were parodies that played out so you could understand them…here they often go too far.

Maybe more than anything, we are seeing the spoils of success with this sequel having twice the budget of the first film. Much of that money is spent on CGI, which puts the emphasis on technology rather than on the story.

Scary Movie used the creativity of the lean days of the TV show In Living Color, and the sequel lost its way from focusing on what is funny. Maybe you really can have too much money.
