30 Second Bottom Line: A celebrity police officer, who is in constant trouble with the top brass, goes on a search and destroy mission to root out crooked cops in the Detroit Police Department.
Story Line: Steven Seagal is Orin Boyd, a quasi-rogue cop and a constant hero in the media, to the consternation of the Police Commissioner. The film begins as the U.S. Vice President is giving a rousing speech about the bad things that happen because of the availability of guns in our society. Irritating the top brass once again, Boyd comes late to the presentation.
Just before the VP leaves in his motorcade, Boyd notices the passing of a small disk like device between two police officers and he suspects a terrorist attack may be in the works. It happens and he comes to the rescue with bullets flying, cars turning over and mayhem of the highest order. This gets him reassigned to the one-five (15) precinct, in a drug plagued area. It's headed by a female Commander (Jill Hennessy). While driving home, minding his own business, Boyd sees a crime in progress. He intercedes and becomes the hero, angering the top brass once again. Of course, he is then assigned to a beat where he directs traffic.
In the process of all these events, Boyd meets drug dealer, and former whiz kid on the Internet, Latrelle (DMX). He made a bundle of cash selling items priced at $9.99 or below on his "www.999.com" website. Latrelle uses TK (Anthony Anderson), the owner of a hip-hop nightclub, featuring bare breasted women dancing in glass cages, to launder his money.
As Boyd goes through his indoctrination in the one-five unit, he meets Strutt (Michael Jai White), who really is a rouge cop on the take, and George (Isaiah Washington), who is a cop that wants to make a positive difference in the community.
The twist in the movie is what secret Latrelle holds…is he really a bad dope dealer or does he have a hidden agenda?
Tom Arnold is Henry, who has a TV morning talk show and meets Boyd in an anger management group therapy session. Arnold is his usual over the top personality, so you know to not take the film too seriously. That may have been the smartest role cast in the film.
The theme song for the movie is a hip-hop version of "Ain't No Sunshine," with lots of use of the N word. Exit Wounds is right on the money for hip-hop fans. It's funny that Seagal, who will be 50 years old this year, fits so well in a movie not aimed at his age bracket. His time at the Buddhist camp appears to have been well-spent (true story).
