30 Second Bottom Line: A lay person, who assists in exorcisms, after having gone through one herself, teaches in a Catholic school She tries to protect a man whose body the devil will inhabit unless there is an intervention.
Story Line: Maya (Winona Ryder) goes to a mental institution with Father Lareaux (John Hurt) to perform an exorcism on a mass murderer. Although his doctor (Alfre Woodard) prefers to use more generally accepted medical procedures, she complies because it is the wish of the patient.
During the exorcism the patient writes numbers in Greek and exhibits signs of the devil. Also revealed is the devil's plan to come to earth in a human form. The targeted host must be someone who has never been baptized, was born of incest and has no faith in God. The target is crime novel writer Peter Kelson (Ben Chaplin) whose expertise is serial killers and mass murderers.
Maya sees evidence that the devil is starting to take control of Peter's body, even before he does. She convinces him that they must act and they become a tag team to fight the devil. As with most "devil take control movies," there is an impending date with doom when the climatic event will occur. In this one, the transformation is to take place at the exact moment of Peter's 33rd birthday.
Tell Me More About It: The biggest problems with any Satanic movie are: (1) we know Satan is going to lose and (2) he will have great powers up until the end.
The ending of the film is decent and better than most that deal with the devil on earth. I left feeling entertained to a degree as I jumped in my seat a few times at the scary parts. The special effects were quite good and not over the top as was the case in End of Days. The film was planned for release last year but got caught in the glut of other films with similar subject matter. It's just as well they waited awhile, or like the academy award nominated film Tumbleweeds that followed Anywhere But Here, even very good movies with similar stories can tend to cancel each other out. It's time for Lost Souls to be discovered and enjoyed.
PG-13 (sex; drug use; violence; language)
