"Space Station" tells the story of what is arguably the greatest engineering feat since landing a man on the moon - the construction of the International Space Station. When completed in 2006, it will have a wingspan of 365 feet and a length of 252 feet.
According to a CNN QuickVote, more than 86% of respondents said that if money were no object, they would buy a ticket for a flight into space. Being up there looking around might be cool for a few days. The real thrill would likely be the anticipation of entering the space craft on the launch pad, the power of the takeoff and the realization of how you will never see the world the same again once you've experienced the fulfillment of the zero countdown.
For those of us who have seen big screen footage of space launches and a view of the Earth from space in the past, "Space Station" has a low "wow" factor, other than the view inside the capsule during take- off and the power of the blast-off itself. Once in space, as magical a technology feat as building a space station is, it's like watching somebody build a giant erector set.
There are a number of neat things to see and facts to learn. Watching globules of water float in the "air" and being caught by an astro/cosmonaut's hand makes you want to have that experience. Many of us saw mock power station walks in "Mission to Mars" but seeing the real thing is kind of scary. If you look closely, you can see a small tether that is used. In doing the space walks, the men and women in these high tech suits can survive outside for up to eight hours in temperatures that range from +/- 250 degrees.
Even with all the "gee whiz" facts and sights, the most powerful one to me was the fact that from space, there are no boundaries on earth. If only everyone could be in space for a day there just might be World Peace.
