30 Second Bottom Line: Experience giant screen coverage of the 2001 Summer X Games; showcasing skateboarding, BMX biking, Moto X and Street Luge competitions.

Story Line:  Cutting-edge, hard rock music blasts you into the daredevil world of the X Game athletes. The ESPN Ultimate X Summer Games are in their 7th year, and most of us have caught at least some life threatening skateboarding moments on cable or satellite sport stations at home.  Here it is simply bigger and louder. This IMAX version takes us from the competitions to the crashes and only lightly touches on the personalities involved.

Tell Me More About It:  Great documentaries immerse us into a new world, often rewarding us with a different way of thinking.  They can be an eye-opening experience and can often forever alter one's view of life, people or our planet. In "Ultimate X" we simply are bombarded with intense visuals and music, a message is somehow missed.  Witnessing an athlete's true inner strengths and vulnerabilities might give us greater insight into our own lives.

"Ultimate X" does not go there.  I found myself wanting to know more about the athletes.  Where are the older guys¾like a thirty-year-old¾who are no longer physically able to do these insane stunts?  Is there such a thing as a former X athlete or do they simply die young?  Who bank rolls these kids?  What do their parents, girlfriends, wives or children think?  What makes them tick?  Why are they compelled to physically threaten their lives this way? These questions are barely raised, hardly answered.  "Ultimate X" stays on a slick surface, and does not delve into the personalities or characters of its star performers. There is one great outstanding line in the movie though.  One of the athletes proclaims, "My only degree is in Anger Management."  That does say a lot, but I wanted more.
