Session 9
This R rated film (for language and brief strong violence) is aiming strictly for the horror genre and not trying to mix in comedy and high wire action.
Starring: David Caruso, Josh Lucas, Peter Mullan and Brendan Sexton.
The setting is an abandoned New England insane asylum where a group of asbestos removal workers have a mission of disposing of dangerous insulation material. While working there they come upon the memories of medical experiments that make their job far more than creepy.
Director Brad Anderson just happened to find the location for the film in the old Danvers Mental Hospital in Massachusetts. It's an ornately oversize complex that was closed down in 1985 which has a high ceiling with a maze of dusty crumbly chambers. The peeling painted catacombs still are crammed with ominous medical paraphernalia such as examining tables and steel hydrotherapy baths. It sounds like it has the feel of the Overlook Hotel in The Shining or the deranged hospital in Lars von Trier's The Kingdom.
The story uses a books worth of fright devices to keep us on the edge of our seat. It was put in limited release (NYC and LA) on the same day as The Others hit the megaplexes across the country. Look for it later in the fall or early next year.
